Oral Appliance Care: How to Keep Your Sleep Apnea Device Clean and Effective

If you’re using an oral appliance for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as an alternative to CPAP therapy, proper care is essential. Oral appliance therapy (OAT) is highly effective, comfortable, and convenient—but maintaining your device correctly ensures it works optimally and lasts for years.

At Ebrahimian Integrative Dentistry, we use the ProSomnus Sleep and Snore Device, but the cleaning and care tips below are relevant for most oral appliances.

1. Brush and Floss Before Using Your Appliance

Your teeth are the main source of bacteria and plaque that can stain or odor your device.

To keep your appliance clean:

  • Brush thoroughly for two minutes.
  • Floss to remove debris between teeth.
  • Avoid mouthwashes containing alcohol or dyes before inserting your appliance, as they can discolor or degrade the material.

For best results, rinse your mouth with water if you want to use mouthwash later, or wait until you remove the appliance.

2. Inspect Your Appliance Daily

Check your oral appliance for cracks, warping, or damage before each use.

Even durable devices can last 10+ years, but a compromised appliance can:

  • Reduce effectiveness in treating sleep apnea
  • Cause bite issues or jaw discomfort

3. How to Clean Your Oral Appliance

Clean your device every morning:

  1. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water—never boiling or very hot water.
  2. Apply gentle hand soap. Antibacterial soap is optional.
  3. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or small denture brush to reach all surfaces.
  4. Avoid toothpaste, which is abrasive and can scratch the appliance.

After cleaning, store the appliance in its case to allow it to air dry.

4. Soaking Your Appliance

Regular soaking is not necessary and can damage your device. Only occasionally, if residue builds up, soak for 15 minutes in water.

Avoid:

  • Boiling or very hot water
  • Mouthwash
  • Denture cleaners not approved for your appliance
  • Bleach or harsh chemicals

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning solutions specific to your oral appliance.

5. Proper Storage

Store your oral appliance in a cool, dry place, ideally in the case provided by your dentist.

Tips:

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures above 140°F.
  • If traveling, use a ventilated container that allows the appliance to dry.

6. Can I Repair My Appliance?

Most oral appliances cannot be repaired at home. DIY fixes can:

  • Reduce effectiveness
  • Cause bite misalignment or jaw issues (TMJ/TMD)

If your device is damaged, contact your sleep apnea dentist to determine if it can be repaired or if a replacement is necessary.

7. Make Oral Appliance Therapy Easy and Effective

Caring for your oral appliance is simple and ensures you receive the full benefits of sleep apnea treatment. Regular cleaning, inspection, and proper storage keep your device functional, comfortable, and long-lasting.
